Introduction to Rhinos

A rhino is a member of the five extant species of odd-toed ungulates in the family of  Rhinocerotidae. Two of the extant species of rhinos are native to Africa, and three to South and Southeast Asia. 

Where do Rhinos live

Most wild African rhinos are now found in just four countries:
1. South Africa,
2. Namibia,
3. Zimbabwe
4. Kenya.
5. They mainly roam in  grassland and open savannah.

What do Rhinos like to eat

Black rhinos fulfill their stomach by eating trees and bushes. They use their lips to pluck leaves and fruit from the branches. White rhinos eat grasses while walking with their enormous heads and squared lips lowered to the ground.

Characteristics of Rhinos

1. There body weight can be 1000 to 1800 kg.

2. They can be 3 to 3.8 metre long.

3. Their tail length is 60 to 70 cm long.

4. They are the second largest animal.

5. They have a horn on their nose.

Interesting facts about Rhinos

1. There are 5 species of rhinos.

Two African – black and white rhinos – and three Asian – greater
one-horned, Sumatran and Javan rhinos. Three of these black, Sumatran and Javan species are listed as ‘critically endangered’ by IUCN – there are thought to be fewer than 70 Javan and 100 Sumatran rhinos left in the wild.

2. They are also known as bulls and cows.

Male rhinos are called ‘bulls’ and females are called ‘cows’. Their young are ‘calves’. 
Together, a group of rhinos is called a ‘crash’. 

3. Their horns are made up of hair.

Rhino horn is made up of keratin – the protein which forms our hair and nails. 

4. They have poor eyesight (vision).

Rhinos did not have a good eyesight – they can not  see a  person standing at a distance of 30m – they mainly survive on their strong sense of smell. 

5. They love the mud the most.

Rhinos can often be seen playing and enjoying in mud, by doing this they make a protective ‘mud coat’ on them to keep them cool, by this muddy coat they stop insects biting and getting rid of any parasites. 

Asian rhinos are also excellent swimmers, they can easily cross a river . But  African Rhinos are very poor swimmers and can drown in deep water.

Conclusion

Rhino has its 5 extended species . They mainly live in South Africa and Zimbabweroam and roam in grassland and open savannah. They maily eat grass and bushes. They are upto 1800 kg heavy with 70 cm long tail. They are also known as bulls and cows and have poor eyesight . The mud is most precious thing for them and they are good swimmers also.
